Georgia Tech and Adidas introduced an alternate uniform Monday that the Yellow Jackets will wear Oct. 5 against North Carolina at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The onyx gray uniforms will pay homage to patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, a twist that’s part of a series of uniforms that Adidas has designed for other college partners that highlights community engagement. The uniform color also pays a nod to Tech’s football past. John Heisman was the first college coach to institute a practice team, a unit that became known as the “Gray Devils.”
The gray uniforms are a first for the team and feature hexagon patterns in gold on the shoulders and thighs. (The uniform in the photos accompanying the release may appear navy blue, but are actually gray.)
The back of the uniform will also feature a crest honoring Cape Day, a day first set apart by the hospital in 2014 to honor the children fighting disease and injuries at CHOA as superheroes. Cape Day is set for Oct. 4, one day before the UNC game.
“First and foremost, it’s a great privilege to have the opportunity to honor the incredibly brave young people that fight every day at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta,” Tech coach Geoff Collins said in a statement. “That’s something that means a lot to our entire organization. Second, it’s fantastic to honor the history and tradition of our football program with a nod to Coach Heisman and the ‘Gray Devils’ that helped prepare his great teams. Finally, the uniforms look incredible! Our players will be excited to wear them and recruits will be excited to see them and know that they too will have the opportunity to wear some of college football’s best and most innovative uniforms here on The Flats.”
The uniform also will include a different helmet design, which will be revealed at a later date, and special-edition shoes.
“It’s going to be an honor to wear the new uniforms,” wide receiver Jalen Camp said in a statement. “They look really nice and it’s going to be a privilege to put them on and pay respect to the children who are fighting and are our real superheroes.”
