Georgia Tech may be in last place in the ACC Coastal Division, but the Yellow Jackets are far from eliminated from contention. That, however, appears to be of little concern to the Jackets.
“The goal every week is just to go 1-0,” running back Jordan Mason said. “We’re not worried about anything else but to go 1-0.”
Tech, which is 1-3 in ACC play, plays Pittsburgh Saturday. A win over the Panthers would advance the Jackets’ opportunity to win at least a share of the Coastal title for the sixth time since the conference split into two divisions in 2005.
North Carolina and Virginia share first in the division at 3-2. Were Tech to win its remaining four league games to reach 5-3, the Jackets’ chances would be best served by North Carolina losing two more games (as the Tar Heels own a tiebreaker over them) and Duke, at 2-3, losing one more (for the same reason as North Carolina). In that scenario, the Jackets would be most unlikely winners of the Coastal, as it would own wins over the other four division teams and none could be better than 5-3.
Tech finishes with Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech and N.C. State. Only the UVA game is on the road. By ESPN’s Football Power Index, Tech has a .5 percent chance of winning all four.
“At the end of the day, we can only control what we can control, and that’s going day by day,” defensive end Antwan Owens said. “That’s going out there every day at practice, giving all we can, taking film study, taking that stuff serious. At the end of the day, that stuff will work itself out. God has a plan for everything.”
