Georgia football quarterback signee Dwan Mathis has arrived at the University of Georgia to begin his collegiate career.
“Every day at Georgia will be a new adventure, it’s all about opportunity,” Mathis told DawgNation during an interview at his home in Romulus, Mich, two days before arriving in Georgia.
Mathis completed four online classes during the fall semester in addition to his regular course work at Oak Park (Mich.) High School to be eligible to enroll early and take part in the Bulldogs’ spring football drills.
“Our family is thankful for this opportunity the University of Georgia has provided to Dwan,” said Terence Mathis, the quarterback’s father.
Mathis chose to sign with the Bulldogs and decommit from Ohio State on Dec. 19 after a late push from the Georgia football staff.
Former Bulldogs’ backup Justin Fields had been talking with the Buckeyes about transferring into Columbus, leading Mathis to consider other options.
“I called before I went in to sign, I had papers from both schools in front of me,” Mathis said. “… I asked if they were talking to Justin Fields, and I got a ‘No’ ”
Mathis, however, said all signs on social media suggested otherwise, and he originally been enticed to come to Georgia during a visit in July of 2017.
The Bulldogs’ quarterback situation was considerably different back then, however, with Jacob Eason returning for his sophomore season, Jake Fromm signed on and Fields considered a strong UGA lean.
Now, 18 months later, only Fromm remains after Fields announced on Friday he is indeed transferring to Ohio State and Eason long gone to Washington.
Mathis was 110-of-176 passing last season with 20 touchdowns last season. As a three-year starter, Mathis passed for more than 5,000 yards and rushed for more than 2,000 yards.
Mathis is a 6-foot-6, 210-pound prospect who in addition to playing high school football also played basketball and ran track.
The newest Bulldog to arrive competed at the New Balance national track meet last summer, competing in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 100 after running a 10.8-second 100 during the individuals events during his team’s regular season.
Mathis said he plans to be at the Georgia men’s basketball game against Vanderbilt in Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday night to “soak it all in with my new classmates.”
