Former Georgia Bulldogs golfer Harris English tested positive for COVID-19, according to the PGA Tour.
In a news release Monday, the tour wrote that English “has been withdrawn” from the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday in Detroit.
“While it’s disappointing to receive this news, as I feel healthy, I’m pleased that the new safety protocols we have in place worked this week,” English said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.
“I fully supported the Tour’s new rule of not allowing anyone on the tournament grounds until testing negative, as protecting others in the field and everyone affiliated with the tournament and the community should be the No. 1 priority as a result of a positive test. I appreciate the Tour’s support, and I look forward to competing again after I’m fully recovered.”
The next step for English, who is reported to be the fifth PGA Tour player to test positive for the coronavirus since the Tour resumed play June 11, is a self-isolation period under CDC guidelines.
English, who was born in Valdosta and grew up in Thomasville, graduated from Georgia in 2011 and plays out of Sea Island. He made his PGA Tour debut in 2012 and has two career victories – the 2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic and the 2014 OHL Classic at Mayakoba. In 2015 he lost in a four-way playoff at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also recorded a Korn Ferry Tour win in 2011.
