The Chick-fil-A Kickoff game announced Thursday that Florida State and West Virginia will meet in Mercedes-Benz Stadium at the start of the 2020 college football season.

It will be the second appearance in Atlanta’s “Kickoff” game for both programs.

West Virginia lost to Alabama in a 2014 opener here, while Florida State is scheduled to open the 2017 season against Alabama in what will be the first college football game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is under construction next door to the Georgia Dome.

“We continue the trend of bringing the best bowl-type college football games to Atlanta on the front side of the season,” said Gary Stokan, president and CEO of Peach Bowl Inc., which runs the season-opening game as well as the postseason bowl.

The Florida State-West Virginia game — the first Chick-fil-A Kickoff game matching an ACC team vs. a Big 12 team — will be played on Sept. 5, 2020, a Saturday.

The game will be televised by ESPN. Kickoff time hasn’t been set. All tickets will be sold through the universities’ ticket offices.

“Our fans have been talking about next (season’s) Chick-fil-A Kickoff game against Alabama since the day it was announced,” Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a statement, “and I think we will see similar enthusiasm for an opener against the Mountaineers.”

“Our players and coaches like playing in neutral-site games in pro venues,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. “When we played in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game in 2014, our players, coaches and fans really enjoyed playing against Alabama in a great environment, and we expect the same in this game.”
