Hawks guard Lou Williams underwent surgery to repair a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Thursday. The surgery was performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and assisted by Hawks orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ashok Reddy at the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
Williams will now undergo a period of rest, treatment and rehabilitation by spending the next 2-3 weeks beginning at the Andrews Institute. The total recovery time is expected to last six to nine months.
According to a statement from the Hawks, Williams' status will be updated as appropriate throughout the recovery.
Williams tore the ACL on Jan. 18 while driving to the basket against the Nets in Brooklyn. The official diagnosis came the following day after an MRI exam in Atlanta.
At the time of the injury Williams was the third-leading scorer on the Hawks. He averaged 14.1 points with 3.6 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 39 games.
