Old Dominion University will retire the jersey of Kent Bazemore in a ceremony on Dec. 10, the school announced Friday.
The Hawks forward said he was “speechless” in a statement released by the school.
In school history, Bazemore ranks first in games played in a career with 140, tied for first for most career wins with 101, second in steals with 250 for a 1.8 average, 16th in assists with 379 for a 2.7 average and 21st in scoring with 1,416 total points for a 10.1 average.
Bazemore was named the Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. He was named to the All-CAA Team and Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and All-Defensive Team in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Bazemore helped lead Old Dominion to back-to-back CAA Championships in 2009-10 and 2010-11. In the first round of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Tournament, Old Dominion upset No. 6 seeded Notre Dame, giving the Monarchs their first NCAA Tournament win since 1995.
“Kent was one of the most exciting players to ever wear an ODU basketball uniform,” Old Dominion Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig said in a statement “Kent possessed a unique quality of being able to ignite the Ted with a spectacular defensive play or monster dunk that would keep the arena buzzing the entire game. … Kent is most deserving of this highest athletic honor.”
Bazemore will join Leo Anthony, Joel Copeland, Kenny Gattison, Dave Twardzik, Wilson Washington, Mark West and Odell Hodge as the only ODU men’s basketball players to have their jerseys retired. The last player to have his retired was Hodge in 2010.
Bazemore graduated from Old Dominion in 2012 as a double major, with Bachelor of Science degrees in Human Services and Criminal Justice.
