The Braves had ‘Big Sexy’ Bartolo Colon on the mound Saturday and they could have ‘Big City’ playing first base Sunday. That means they might even have ‘Big Sexy’ and ‘Big City’ on the field at the same time in a game next week when Colon starts again.
The Braves traded for first baseman Matt Adams Saturday, giving up a prospect to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Adams is nicknamed ‘Big City’. According to former teammate David Freese, several Cardinals players were seeking a nickname for the 6-foot-4, 260-pounder when he broke into the majors. And one shouted out "Big City” and it stuck.
"Well he's a big boy that can rake [the ball],” Freese says. “I guess it hit because the guy can flat-out hit."
The Braves hope he can do that at SunTrust Park as a replacement for injured first baseman Freddie Freeman, who is out at least 10 weeks due to a broken wrist.
Adams, who is not from a big city (Philipsburg, Pa., population 2,770), lost 30 pounds in the offseason and will report to the Braves at around 230 pounds.
Braves general manager John Coppolella said Adams is expected to fly to Atlanta on Sunday morning and join the team in time for the 1:35 p.m. game against the Washington Nationals.
If he does, make sure you say hello to ‘Big City.’
