Braves quotes after 8-5 loss in nightcap of Monday’s doubleheader with the Mets.
** BRIAN SNITKER
On bullpen faltering
“It was kind of a weird inning in (A.J.) Minter’s inning. It was just kind of like one of those innings that wasn’t meant to be. Minter made good pitches, I mean, ground ball was just out of reach, and a bloop, just kind of seeing-eye stuff. It wasn’t like they squared him up good or anything.”
Game had a different feel after the long day, long delay before Game 2
“Yeah, it was just one of them games. Couple of plays we didn’t make. Came back good and liked our chances, had the deck stacked in the inning we tied it, just couldn’t pierce a gap or who knows what happens.”
On McCarthy after ragged first inning
“He settled down good. There was a tough play that Camargo couldn’t make on the slow roller (in the sixth); I was thinking if we make that play then maybe we can sneak him through the sixth inning and then been in pretty good shape. And Peter (Moylan), I don’t think made that bad a pitch to Rosario, but it was just one of them games, their hits were just kind of right where they needed to be. We couldn’t get anything to come at us.”
**BRANDON McCARTHY
On his performance after giving up two runs in first inning
“I made a mess of it in the first with the throwing error, or could have gotten out with just one run. I tried to make better pitches the rest of the way and did a good job, then in the sixth I felt like I made a bunch of good pitches and they ended up with three hits and ended up with a few runs. But otherwise I felt like I did an OK job getting us deep and tried to keep it as close as I could.”
On whether the three-hour delay before the first pitch affected him
“It’s just weird. It’s hard to keep yourself going for three hours without fulling ramping up. Mentally I struggle with it. But you’ve just got to get through it. For the rest of these guys, Freddie and these guys taking at-bats 12 hours apart – that’s a ridiculous, stupid day of baseball.”
On how the team fought back
“Yeah, it was death by a thousand cuts in this game. We just kind of got bled to death slowly, but there still wasn’t a lot of quit. There was a lot of tired; bodies ready to quit, but no one giving up.”
A.J. MINTER
On his seventh inning, how some ground balls got through
“It’s just baseball. You can’t let that affect what’s going to happen tomorrow. I felt like I was commanding the ball good, throwing strikes. Unfortunately it’s a game of inches, both ways. Yeah, I’m frustrated, but frustrated with myself. Nothing I could really do. Now just go home, sleep on it, come back tomorrow and put it past you.”
