Baseball Hall of Fame inductees: Same team, same year

There have been 18 induction ceremonies in which two players from the same organization were enshrined in the Hall of Fame. But first-time candidates for the Hall of Fame, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine could become only the second pair of teammates elected to the Hall of Fame in the same year by the members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Since 1936, there have been 18 induction ceremonies in which two players from the same organization were enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Napoleon Lajoie: Second baseman, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1896-1900); Philadelphia A's (1901-1902, 1915-1916); and Cleveland Indians (1902-1914). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1937. Lajoie had a lifetime batting average of .339. On May 23, 1901, Lajoie became the first big league player to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded.

Tris Speaker: Center fielder, who played for the Boston Red Sox (1907-1915); Cleveland Indians (1916-1926); Washington Senators (1927); and Philadelphia A's (1928). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1937. Speaker still holds the career marks for doubles (793).

Charles Comiskey: Baseball executive, who played for the St. Louis Browns or Brown Stockings (1882-1889, 1891); Chicago Pirates (1890); and Cincinnati Reds (1892-1894). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1939. He was one of the founders of the American League in 1901 and owned the Chicago White Sox for 31 years, winning five pennants.

Eddie Collins: Second baseman, who played for the Philadelphia A's (1906-1914, 1927-1930) and Chicago White Sox (1915-1926). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1939. Collins played in the majors for 25 seasons. For 10 of those seasons, he batted over .340, and had more than 3,000 hits.

Cap Anson: First baseman, who played for the Rockford Forest Citys (1871); Philadelphia Athletics (1872-1875); and Chicago White Stockings or Colts (1876-1897). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1939. Anson batted over .300 during 20 seasons, accumulating more than 3,000 hits.

Al Spalding: Executive, who played for the Boston Red Stockings (1871-1875) and Chicago White Stockings (1876-1877). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1939. Spalding's 47 victories led the 1876 Chicago White Stockings to the first-ever National League championship. With the success of the sporting goods business he founded in 1876, Spalding left the playing field for an executive role with the White Stockings; as team president from 1882 to 1891, he directed the club to three pennants.

Frank Chance: First baseman, who played for the Chicago Cubs (1898-1912) and New York Yankees (1913-14). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946. Best known as the first baseman in the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance double-play combination made famous in the 1910 poem. He guided the Cubs' dynasty, winning four pennants in five years (1906-10) to gain the nickname The Peerless Leader. The club's 116 victories against only 36 losses in 1906 remain unmatched in Major League history.

John Evers: Second baseman, who played for the Chicago Cubs (1902-1913); Boston Braves (1914-1917, 1929); Philadelphia Phillies (1917); and Chicago White Sox (1922). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946. Evers was the pivot man in the Cubs' famed Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance infield. He helped lead the Chicago Cubs to four National League pennants and two world championships.

Joseph Tinker: Shortstop, who played for the Chicago Cubs (1902-1912, 1916); Cincinnati Reds (1913); and the Chicago Whales of the Federal League (1914-1915). Tinker was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946.

Eddie Plank: Pitcher, who played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1901-1914); St. Louis Terriers (1915); and St. Louis Browns (1916-1917). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946. Plank's 326 victories rank third-most all time among lefties behind Warren Spahn and Steve Carlton.

Rube Waddell: Pitcher, who played for the Louisville Colonels (1897, 1899); Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-1901); Chicago Cubs (1901); Philadelphia A's (1902-1907); and St. Louis Browns (1908-1910). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946. Waddell led the American League in strikeouts for six years in a row.

Lefty Grove: Pitcher, who played for the Philadelphia A's (1925-1933) and Boston Red Sox (1934-1941). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1947 Grove topped the American League in wins four times, winning percentage five times and strikeouts seven consecutive times.

Mickey Cochrane: Catcher, who played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1925-33) and Detroit Tigers (1934-37). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1947 Cochrane batted .320 during his 13-year career.

Al Simmons: Left fielder, who played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1924-1932, 1940-1941, 1944); Chicago White Sox (1933-1935); Detroit Tigers (1936); Washington Senators (1937-1938); Boston Braves (1939); Cincinnati Reds (1939); and Boston Red Sox (1943). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1953. Called Bucketfoot Al because of an unusual batting style in which he stepped toward the dugout, Simmons recorded 11 consecutive seasons as a .300 hitter and 100-RBI man.

Charles Bender: Pitcher, who played for the Philadelphia A's (1903-14); Baltimore Terrapins (Federal League, 1915); Philadelphia Phillies (1916-17); and Chicago White Sox (1925). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1953. Bender pitched in five World Series, going 6-4 with an ERA of 2.44.

Ray Schalk: Catcher, who played for the Chicago White Sox (1912-1928) and New York Giants (1929). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1955. Schalk led the league in fielding percentage eight times and putouts nine times.

Ted Lyons: Pitcher, who played for the Chicago White Sox (1923-1942, 1946). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1955. Lyons won 260 games in his 21 seasons. He managed the Sox for three seasons following his playing career.

Edd Roush: Center fielder, who played for the Chicago White Sox (1913); Indianapolis Hoosiers (1914); Newark Pepper (1915); New York Giants (1916, 1927-1929); and Cincinnati Reds (1916-1926, 1931). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Veterans Committee in 1962. Roush hit over .300 11 consecutive times and won batting crowns in 1917 and '19.

Bill McKechnie: Manager, who led the Pittsburgh Pirates (1907, 1910-1912, 1918, 1920); Boston Braves (1913); New York Yankees (1913); Indianapolis Hoosiers (1914); Newark Pepper (1915); New York Giants (1916); and Cincinnati Reds (1916-1917). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1962. McKechnie is the only manager to win pennants with three different National League clubs - Pittsburgh (1925), St. Louis (1928), and Cincinnati (1939-40).

Lefty Gomez: Pitcher, who played for the New York Yankees (1930-1942) and Washington Senators (1943). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1972. Gomez twice won the pitching Triple Crown in 1934 and 1937. He set a World Series record by winning six games without a loss.

Yogi Berra: Catcher, who played for the New York Yankees (1946-1963) and New York Mets (1965). Berra was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1972. A three-time American League MVP, Berra's career featured 14 league pennants and 10 World Series championships.

Mickey Welch: Pitcher, who played for the Troy Trojans (1880-1882) and New York Gothams, Giants (1883-1892). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1973. A nine-time 20-game winner, Welch was the third pitcher in big league history to reach 300 victories. He won 17 straight games in 1885, finishing the season with a 44-11 record.

George Kelly: First baseman, who played for the New York Giants (1915-1917, 1919-1926); Pittsburgh Pirates (1917); Cincinnati Reds (1927-1930); Chicago Cubs (1930); and Brooklyn Dodgers (1932). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1973. Kelly helped lead the Giants to four consecutive pennants from 1921-24.

Whitey Ford: Pitcher, who played for the New York Yankees (1950, 1953-1967). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1974. The lefthander's lifetime record of 236-106 gives him the best winning percentage (.690) of any 20th-century pitcher.
