The probability of Lionel Messi playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Atlanta United increased significantly Thursday.
In his first press conference since signing with Miami on July 16, Messi said he had no problem playing on artificial turf because he grew up playing on it in Barcelona’s academy.
Atlanta United will host Miami on Sept. 16. The two teams already have met, with Messi and Miami defeating the Five Stripes in the Leagues Cup on July 25 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Many people on social media have speculated with an arrogant certainty for weeks that Messi never would play on artificial turf.
Though Messi said he has no problem playing on turf, it’s not a certainty he will be there with Miami because Argentina plays at Bolivia on Sept. 12 in a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. It is presumed that Messi will be called back into Argentina’s national team during that window, which includes a match Sept. 7 against Ecuador in Buenos Aires.
