Atlanta’s run of playing host to significant soccer events this year got another boost with the news that English powerhouse Chelsea will play Mexican powerhouse Club America on July 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Atlanta United season ticket holders and Atlanta Falcons PSL holders will receive information on their exclusive presale soon, according to Arthur M. Blank Sports and Entertainment. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Wednesday through Ticketmaster.
This match will join the SheBelieves Cup on April 6 and the Copa America matches June 20 and 27.
This will be Chelsea’s sixth match in Atlanta after it played Newcastle here last summer. The Blues have won the Champions League twice and the Premier League six times.
“We are really excited to be returning to Atlanta this summer as part of our preseason tour,” Chelsea CEO Chris Jurasek said in a statement provided by AMBSE. “Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a truly remarkable venue, and we cannot wait to play there again in front of our U.S. fan base when we come up against Club America.”
It will be Club America’s fifth time playing in Atlanta. Grass will be put down in the stadium. It will be the fourth meeting between the two clubs. Club America has won the CONCACAF Champions League seven times and LIGA MX 14 times.
“We are very happy and excited to continue playing in the United States with great international teams, this time with Chelsea, a world-renowned team,” Santiago Baños, President of Club América, said in a statement provided by AMBSE. “We hope it will be a great game for all our fans, and for all the soccer lovers.”
