Atlanta United’s Quentin Westberg announces retirement

Atlanta United goalkeeper Quentin Westberg announced his retirement as a soccer player Tuesday.

Westberg, 38 years old, made six appearances for the club the past two seasons. He was unavailable for selection for the last third of Atlanta United’s just completed season because he was in concussion protocol.

Westberg made 74 appearances in MLS with Toronto, which he signed with before 2019, and Atlanta United. While with Toronto, Westberg saved a Josef Martinez penalty kick in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals that contributed to the Five Stripes not being able to defend their MLS Cup.

Born in Paris, Westberg is a dual national. He chose to represent the U.S. internationally. Before joining Toronto, Westberg played for Auxerre in France’s second division, where he made 20 appearances.

Atlanta United is expected to announce its end-of-season contract decisions Tuesday or Wednesday.

Striker Jamal Thiare sent out a thank-you note on social media to the team’s supporters Monday night. The ambiguity of the message didn’t clarify if the team is picking up the option on his contract for next season.
