Atlanta United midfielder Dax McCarty announced his retirement - effective at the end of the MLS season - in a post on social media Monday.
“The competitor in me thinks I can play forever but the realist in me knows that is the right time to walk away,” he said from his X handle (formerly Twitter),
McCarty, 37, has 481 appearances in MLS regular season matches, including 15 with Atlanta United. He’s made 511 appearances in regular season and playoff matches.
McCarty signed with Atlanta United as a free agent before this season. It is his 19th in MLS.
He said in his post that he’s known for a couple of weeks and that he’s grateful for everyone who has helped him during his career.
“I know that we still have plenty to play for,” he said. “I still have a burning desire to be successful this season. I want to enjoy every last training session and every last game.”
