Atlanta United’s ninth MLS season will open Feb. 22 against Montreal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and its regular season will end at home against D.C. United on Oct. 18.

The match against Montreal will be the first chance for supporters to see in action the team’s new manager, whose hire is pending, any new Designated Players and its new primary kit.

The schedule also features three three-match homestands, one six-match road stretch to accommodate the Club World Cup matches scheduled to be played in Atlanta, and what seems to be some softening of Apple’s broadcast wish to have most matches played at the same time in the different time zones.

Atlanta United’s Western Conference opponents will feature home matches against Dallas, Seattle and expansion-side San Diego, and road matches at Austin, a first, Colorado and LAFC. Among those, LAFC, Seattle and Colorado made the playoffs this year.

Atlanta United will play each of its Eastern Conference opponents home and away to complete the 34-match schedule.

The season won’t pause entirely for the Club World Cup, which will be played June 14-July 13 and will result in the most challenging portion of Atlanta United’s schedule for players and the busiest time for soccer fans in the area because of the challenge of trying to attend as many matches as possible during this stretch:

May 31 Atlanta United at Red Bulls, 7:30 p.m.

June 12 Atlanta United at NYCFC, 7:30 p.m.

June 16 Chelsea versus Club Leon, Group D, 3 p.m.

June 19 Inter Miami versus Porto, Group A, 3 p.m.

June 22 Manchester City versus Al Ain, Group G, 9 p.m.

June 25 Atlanta United at Columbus, 7:30 p.m.

June 28 Atlanta United at Miami, 7:30 p.m.

June 29 Round of 16 match, noon

July 1 Round of 16 match, 9 p.m.

July 5 Quarterfinal, noon

July 5 Atlanta United at D.C. United, 7:30 p.m.

July 12 Atlanta United at Toronto, 7:30 p.m.

The process of putting in grass at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Club World Cup is tentatively scheduled to start after June 3.

The All-Star match is scheduled to be played July 23 in Austin, Texas. Dates for the start of the playoffs and MLS Cup will be announced later.

Atlanta United’s schedule includes four Wednesday matches: May 14 at Austin; May 28 against Orlando, which knocked Atlanta United out of last season’s playoffs; June 25 at Columbus, the reigning Leagues Cup champs; and July 16 against Chicago and its new manager Gregg Berhalter. Also, there is a Thursday match at NYCFC on June 12.

Game times will vary from 2 p.m. for its first road match at Charlotte on March 1 to several at 2:30 p.m. and to as late as 10:30 p.m., when the team plays at LAFC on Oct. 5.

The season will not pause for the Leagues Cup, which is scheduled to be played July 29-Aug. 31, which is why league matches resume a one-a-week schedule.
