Atlanta United and fullback Ronald Hernandez agreed to a new contract Friday.
The signing for next season, plus an option for 2026, is important because Hernandez will be the only experienced healthy fullback for the right side when training camp opens in January. Brooks Lennon, who started 33 matches last season, is scheduled to miss training camp and the first few matches of the season after undergoing surgery on his shoulder.
Hernandez, 27 years old, appeared in 17 matches, making 10 starts in regular-season and playoff matches last season. He has made 54 appearances since joining the club before the 2021 season.
Atlanta United declined the option on Hernandez’s contract for 2025, but said it was going to try to renegotiate with him. The new salary wasn’t disclosed. Hernandez received guaranteed compensation of $450,000 last season, according to the MLSPA salary database.
Hernandez is the second player to re-sign with Atlanta United. The team announced Thursday that it had agreed to contract terms with striker Jamal Thiare.
