Atlanta United’s front office make over began with the team announcing on Monday that it has hired David Tenney as director of high performance.
Tenney, most recently at Austin, will replace Ryan Alexander, who was director of sports science.
Tenney worked with Atlanta United President Garth Lagerwey at Seattle. Tenney worked there from 2009-17 before joining the NBA’s Orlando Magic from 2017-20. He joined Austin in Sept. 2020. Earlier in Tenney’s career, he worked at Sporting KC, where he was fitness coach and goalkeeper coach, and George Mason.
Tenney attended college and played soccer at Virginia Tech.
Tenney earned a Bachelor’s degree in Coaching Science from George Mason, a Master’s in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s certificate in Tactical Periodization Methodology by Vitor Frade. He earned Doctorate degree in Organizational Development and Leadership from Arizona.
Tenney is another in a list of experienced employees Lagerwey has hired, joining Sarah Kate Noftsinger as senior vice president/chief business officer in October 2023, and Javier Perez as director of methodology in April 2024. Noftsinger previously worked at Adidas. Perez previously worked at Toronto in MLS, and U.S. Soccer among other places before that.
Lagerwey’s next hires are expected to be a new manager and a technical director.
