Atlanta United’s 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday drew the second-highest rating in history for an MLS regular-season game on Fox Sports 1.
Fox Sports said the game delivered 375,000 viewers, second only on its network to the game between Orlando and D.C. United on June 14, 2015, which delivered 378,000 viewers.
The viewership for Atlanta United’s game was 60 percent more than the first Sunday match in the 2016 season, according to Fox Sports.
Atlanta United will have 14 more nationally televised games this season, including Sunday’s at Minnesota United. It will be on ESPN2.
According to MLS, opening weekend viewership was the highest in the U.S. since 2004. That includes the most-viewed opening weekend game on a Spanish-language channel (Univision, Dallas vs. L.S. Galaxy drew 509,000 viewers). ESPN saw a 14-percent increase in viewership this year for Orlando City vs. NYCFC compared to its opening game last season.
