BOSTON — The Hawks seem to be getting a head start on their coaching staff for next season. The team will add former Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey to Quin Snyder’s staff next season, according to people familiar with the situation.

The team and Brey have not finalized what his role will be with the Hawks next season, but he has been observing practices.

The South Bend Tribune first reported the news.

Brey resigned from his post at Notre Dame in January with a 483-280 overall record after 23 years. He and Snyder have a history of working together. Brey coached Snyder from 1985-89 at Duke as an assistant before eventually becoming the coach at Delaware in 1995.

The Hawks already have brought aboard two assistants who worked with Snyder when he coached the Jazz. Jeff Watkinson and Steve Klei have been added to the Hawks’ staff as assistant coach-integrative basketball development and assistant coach, respectively.

Both Watkinson and Klei have been working with the players and could be seen at practices and shootarounds since last month.
