The Falcons got no help from the Panthers early Sunday.

They got no help from themselves against the Commanders late Sunday.

The results knocked the Falcons out of first place in the NFC South, a position now held by the Buccaneers (9-7) after their easy 48-14 win over the Panthers. The Falcons (8-8) fell a game back with one to play after a 30-24 overtime loss to the Commanders.

The Falcons no longer control their fate.

The Falcons’ playoff fate will come down to the final week of the NFL’s regular season. The Falcons must defeat the Panthers at home and hope the Buccaneers lose to the Saints at home on Sunday. Both games will be played at 1 p.m. If things break the Falcons’ way and the teams will finish with the same record, the Falcons will win the division and earn a playoff berth based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Commanders clinched a playoffs spot with the win. The Rams also earned a postseason spot with the result. The only remaining playoff spot available in the conference is the South division winner.
