FLOWERY BRANCH -- Falcons defensive end Calais Campbell passed his physical and was removed from the non-football injured list on Monday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The 2023 season will be the 16th for Campbell, a second-round pick of the Cardinals in 2008. The 6-foot-8, 300-pounder, who will turn 37 Sept. 1, had 5.5 sacks with the Ravens last season - a total which would have been a team-high for the Falcons in 2021 and second in 2022.

Campbell, who had an undisclosed injury, has not practiced since the start of training camp on July 27. He was seen working with the training staff on Saturday.

“Same thing. We’ll see early in the week; maybe we’ll get him back out there and ramp him back up,” Falcons coach Arthur Smith said about Campbell after the Saturday practice.

It’s unlikely that Campbell will participate in the team’s joint practices with the Dolphins on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Falcons are set to play their exhibition season opener against the Dolphins at 7 p.m. Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
