NEW ORLEANS — Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, a native of Brunswick who’s in his 11th season in the NFL, is set to play in his second Super Bowl.
He discussed his South Georgia roots while preparing to face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Caesars Superdome.
“That’s my hometown, South Georgia-bred,” Slay told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday. “I’m thankful for my city. The city has done a lot for me. I do a lot of giving back to that city because that city kind of built me to who I am today.”
Slay was headed to Florida, but went to Mississippi State. He was drafted in the second round (36th overall) of the 2013 NFL draft by the Lions.
“I think Georgia looked at me a good bit,” Slay said. “I just went where the best fit was at. I kind of wanted to go to Florida. Then Dan Mullen became the head coach (at Mississippi State), and I was in his primary recruiting area. So, I just followed Dan Mullen (who was Florida’s offensive coordinator when hired by Mississippi State).”
Eight players from high schools in Georgia are set to play in the Super Bowl.
