The Braves are 4-0 so far this season in doubleheader games, with one more set scheduled for Friday against the Nationals at Truist Park.
Due to weather, COVID-19 precautions and social-injustice protests, there are already more than three dozen doubleheaders scheduled across baseball this season. Doubleheaders were shortened to seven innings for the 60-game 2020 season.
Atlanta swept the Phillies and Yankees last month. Friday’s games were scheduled after the Aug. 19 game against Washington in Atlanta was postponed because of inclement weather.
This is the most doubleheaders the team has played since it had three in 2018 and four during the 2017 seasons. (The franchise record for most doubleheaders in a season is nine, by the Boston Braves in 1928.) They played none in 2016.
Under manager Brian Snitker, who took over as interim in May 2016 following the dismissal of Fredi Gonzalez, the Braves are 11-7 in doubleheaders.
In that time, Braves pitching prospects are 2-1 making their debut in a doubleheader: Ian Anderson (Aug. 26, vs. Yankees) and Touki Toussaint (Aug. 13, 2018, vs. Marlins) won their openers; while Sean Newcomb (June 10, 2017, vs. Mets) lost his first league start in the first game of a doubleheader.
