When Megan Jovon Ruth Pete walks across the stage December 11 to accept her bachelor’s degree in health administration, she’ll have added a “trophy” to go with her Grammy, BET, People’s Choice and AMA awards.

The work she did to earn the latter awards will allow her to use the latest one to help others.

“She” is Megan Thee Stallion, rapper and one of Glamour magazine’s women of the year 2021.

The Houston native pursued her degree from Texas Southern University part time and online as a tribute to her mother, Holly Thomas, who died from brain cancer in March 2019.

“I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,” she told People magazine. “She saw me going to school before she passed.”

Pete has posted several photos on social media touted her accomplishment and her excitement about graduating.

With her degree and the money she’s earned as a superstar, Pete told Glamour she plans to open an assisted living facility, which was an idea she had long before the pandemic.

“I watched my grandmother take care of my great-grandmother all my life,” she told Blavity. “Just watching these two little old ladies take care of each other, I was like, ‘Y’all need some help.’”

The facility will benefit more that just those who need care, however.

According to Glamour, Pete wants to provide experience and job opportunities to female graduates of historically Black colleges and universities.

“Come and get your experience over here,” she said. And to their kin, she is clear on her vision: “Generations taking care of generations, making people feel like they are still at home, still with their families.”
