More than a ‘margin of victory’
A photo essay: Voters from the Asian American and Pacific Islander community turn out for presidential candidates.
A couple dozen Asian American voters gathered in a Donald Trump campaign office on a recent evening, waiting to learn more about what they can do to help reelect the former president.
Pork buns and spring rolls were laid out to snack on as staff from Trump’s campaign prepared the training.
Thuy Hotle told the room of Asian American Trump supporters that the 2020 election results show why every vote matters.
“We can do this,” said Hotle, who attended the training. “If you think about last time, the margin of victory was (about) 11,000 votes. There are that many of us.”
It’s a similar sentiment heard throughout the Asian American and Pacific Islander community — they are the “margin of victory.” But they are more powerful than that.
There are nearly 239,000 registered voters in Georgia who identify as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. That’s about 20 times the margin by which President Joe Biden captured the state four years ago.
AAPI voters are one of Georgia’s fastest-growing voting blocs, and for one of the first times, grassroots organizers are making sure to focus on wooing them.
Supporters of Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris have made it a point to engage with AAPI voters this election cycle. Nonpartisan AAPI groups have also spent time making sure that all eligible residents, whether they are newly naturalized or were born in the United States, are registered to vote next month.
While AAPI voters skewed Democratic in the 2022 elections across the country, a higher proportion voted for Republicans that cycle than in 2018, according to exit polls.
