The first shipment of equipment for Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) arrived Monday at the Port of Savannah.
HMGMA and the Georgia Ports Authority held a ceremony to commemorate another significant step in the journey of the largest economic development in state history. The shipment contained a crane for the stamping facility.Carter Infinger, Bryan County commissioner and chairman of the Savannah Joint Development Authority, called it a big day and said the plant will bring ‘generational change’ for the community.

“This is a huge milestone not only for Hyundai but for the JDA,” said Infinger. “Look at the plant today. We have buildings coming out of the ground. I can’t thank Hyundai enough for coming to our area. There’s going to be plenty of opportunities for jobs.”In May 2022, Hyundai Motor Company announced it would invest $5.5 billion in an EV battery and manufacturing plant in Bryan County. According to Infinger, HMGMA is still on pace to open in 2025.
Oscar Kwon, CEO and president of HMGMA, was on hand for the celebration and spoke of how monumental the metaplant is.
“I’ve been working on this project since the beginning of last year,” said Kwon, “and I’m very appreciative to see the progress of the metaplant site. We are making steady progress. We look forward to sharing important milestones in the future.”
