Tariffs will harm our neighbors — and us, too

The United States is unbelievably fortunate to be surrounded by large bodies of water and two friendly countries. Whatever differences we occasionally have with these countries, they are minor in comparison with the challenges faced by other large democracies adjacent or near hostile nations. Our neighbors are eager to work peacefully with the United States to improve the security and prosperity of all three nations. All they ask is that we respect their sovereignty and work for mutually beneficial goals.

Unfortunately, our president-elect believes from his career in real estate that every deal must have a winner and a loser. But zero-sum deals rarely work in international diplomacy, and imposing tariffs that damage the economies of Canada and Mexico cannot possibly benefit the United States. It is an insane policy that can only antagonize our neighbors and make us all less prosperous and less secure.

Democrats still don’t get it

After Democrats lost the recent presidential election, they said they simply did not get their message out; they were not clear. After a few weeks, they decided they had become the party of the elites and needed to get back in touch with the “common folks.” Now their mantra is that Democrats should not despair because they actually almost won, claiming the percentage they lost by was insignificant as if that summation made President-elect Donald Trump somehow less the winner.

Democrats still don’t get it. The common folks, the working class, along with the majority of the voters, got their message and did not like it.

The Democrats campaigned on destroying Trump, trying to make him the enemy of the people. In doing so, they destroyed themselves.
