Atlanta’s mass transit is inadequate

MARTA is very limited in coverage for a city the size of Atlanta. I’m not sure throwing more money at MARTA would make any difference.

I recently traveled to Hong Kong. Now, there’s a transportation system worth emulating! Our city and MARTA leadership should get their act together.

Thank you, AJC, for continuing to expose inefficiencies and corruption in metro Atlanta.

Thoughtless reform is bringing mass chaos

Republicans in the U.S. Congress have submitted a government funding proposal that would cut $2 trillion from “mandatory spending” (a category that includes Social Security and Medicare). At the same time, they propose cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy to the tune of $4.5 trillion.

Meanwhile, instead of a careful assessment of ways to reduce waste in government, they are turning thousands of loyal civil servants out of their jobs, without regard to the records of these people, their accumulated know-how or their contributions to our country.

Is Georgia prepared to pay unemployment for all these individuals? I have never seen such a thoughtless approach to reform. Mass chaos can’t be good for our country.

Government cuts are painful, but needed

The article (“Musk and Trump shake government’s foundations,” AJC, Feb. 9) assumes that America was founded to become a large institution upon which millions of Americans depend. Until the 1930s, the federal government was small. In 1934, President Franklin Roosevelt began an expansion of government to a size never anticipated.

It has grown to a point of little or no accountability, where funds are spent by unelected bureaucrats on needless and often harmful programs here and abroad. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are returning government to its original purpose. If successful, they will save America from an inevitable collapse when America faces bankruptcy.

The deadline to reduce our debt is within the lifetime of most of our population. Cuts are painful and damaging in some cases. Without serious, short-term pain, America will decline and become a vassal state of a nation like China, subject to the whims of others.

Judiciary must stop Trump’s ‘emperor’ ambitions

Donald Trump is in the process of dismantling the checks and balances that were put in place to prevent any one person or group from taking absolute control of our government.

He is breaking the law, violating the Constitution and usurping Congress’ authority. A president’s “legitimate authority” does not include gutting or shutting down agencies and departments enacted by Congress or freezing funds allocated by Congress.

Since the Republicans in Congress are more interested in preserving their jobs than in upholding the Constitution and the law, it is up to the judiciary to stop Trump from becoming the emperor he aspires to be. For the sake of democracy, let us hope they succeed.
