Our standing in the world is being tarnished

Necessary and critical agencies of our government are being diminished by the executive branch under the false premise of efficiency. Our civil rights are being undermined with complete prejudice and our standing in the world is being tarnished as the United States can no longer be counted on to stand with our NATO allies.

Though the two major political parties have differed in their approach to issues, the separation of power among Congress and the judicial and executive branches has remained intact. That is not so now. A different kind of truth is being revealed.

This president rules with omnipotence, and with faint regard for the law. When Donald Trump refuses to acknowledge that Russia started the war in Ukraine, disrespects and threatens Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a televised White House meeting we are witnessing a profoundly disturbing change. Trump’s alliance with Vladimir Putin is undeniable. No one who values our democracy can rest easy today.

Zelenskyy owed an apology

Our president and vice president’s tongue-lashing of the president of Ukraine sharply contrasts with the dignity, courtesy, restraint and respect demonstrated when we confronted the ambassador from the Empire of Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This current behavior by our elected leaders was arrogant, petty and shameful and soils our fundamental reputation as a beacon of enlightenment for all people. We must vocally reject such despicable behavior.

Regardless of all else, Zelenskyy was entitled to be treated with respect as the leader of a sovereign nation. Simple dignity demands a public, unequivocal apology by Donald Trump and JD Vance.

Putin pulling strings for peace deal

I am utterly appalled by Trump and his bait-and-switch minions who talked out of both sides of their mouths about Ukraine and Putin — calling out Putin for his outrageous war one minute, then launching a diatribe against Zelenskyy the next.

The disgusting “you aren’t grateful enough” rant that Vance and Trump engaged in was clearly staged — for Russian media, who were present, filming it all for their main audience, Putin.

To see a U.S. president wave his finger in the face of a beleaguered ally — well, ally until Trump got power — that was the disrespect that he and his crony Vance kept accusing Zelenskyy of.

Folks, get ready for the United States of Russia. Putin is clearly pulling the strings.

Peace at what cost?

Trump says he wants peace. That may be true — but what kind of peace? A peace where Putin takes his piece of Ukraine, and Trump takes his own, redefining peace on their terms.

President Zelenskyy stood firm in defense of his people and his country as he spoke with President Trump. He understands real peace comes from strength, not deals that carve up sovereign nations.

As Republicans, we have long stood for freedom, national sovereignty and the strength to deter aggression. Let’s remember those principles now.
