‘Gleeful’ job cutting destroys morale

Americans should not be surprised by the federal worker reductions by Musk/Trump. Trump campaigned to do this. But how it has been executed with lots of PR and fanfare is awful. This includes Musk gleefully walking around with a chain saw.

It doesn’t have to be this way. I have been involved with corporate restructuring, which has resulted in significant job losses. It was always a priority to treat employees who lost their jobs with compassion and dignity. That is the right thing to do and what Americans should expect from their leaders.

Job loss is a major stressful life event like the death of a loved one or divorce. It dramatically affects the individual and family. Further, the employees left must do the work remaining with fewer people, and that is difficult with memories of how poorly their prior coworkers were treated. Morale is destroyed.

Debt will only grow with tax cuts and payouts

I constantly see letters to the editor bemoaning the skyrocketing national debt. The only solution they offer is to cut social programs to the bone and then some. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is pushing massive tax cuts for the billionaire class, with standard trickle-down economics as the rationale. We all know what rolls downhill, and it’s not prosperity for the poor and middle class.

Now Musk is suggesting that, thanks to DOGE, the government can send $5,000 checks to each taxpayer, which will really inflate the deficit. I have yet to see a Fox News-watching deficit hawk suggest increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporations to help reduce the deficit.

Thinking all those overpaid talking heads at Fox News need to pay their fair share. These super-patriots need to step up to help America.

We’ve got the fox watching the henhouse

Lately, there have been several letters supporting the Trump administration’s efforts to cut waste and fraud from our government. I do not disagree with this sentiment but personally believe government workers to be honest and hardworking. These people are not our enemies.

Wouldn’t it be smarter to do thorough research on agencies to determine waste and rely on whistleblowers and inspector generals (who have been fired) to find fraud? To really deal with the nation’s debt will be painful, as defense, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and payments on existing debt represent the vast majority of our nation’s expenditures. The Trump tax cuts would also need to not be extended.

Trusting the Trump administration to eliminate debt is akin to having the fox watch the henhouse. During the president’s first term, the nation’s debt went from $20 trillion to $28 trillion in only four years, an astonishing 39% increase.
