Legislators fail to make gun safety a priority

After the worst school shooting in Georgia history occurred in September, only one gun safety bill is still alive in the Georgia Legislature (HB 79). However, two bills that would expand access to guns are still being considered (SB 163 and SB 47).

This is way out of step with what the majority of Georgians want, and I hope people are paying attention. The state could still take a step to protect our kids by funding a safe firearm storage education campaign. Public policy will remain out of step with public opinion on gun safety until enough regular people tell the Legislature that its response to tragedies like the one at Apalachee High School is simply not good enough.

We need more people to join the chorus and vote for our kids’ safety.

ICE in Georgia? Have a heart, governor

Gov. Kemp, how can a Christian man support the work of ICE in Georgia?

What about the gospel of Matthew 25:25, “I was a stranger, and you welcomed me?”

How can a businessman support deporting a large percentage of willing laborers from agriculture, construction and so much more in our state?

Have a heart, dear governor!

Don’t sacrifice public good to lower deficit

The American public and the world are suffering from whiplash because of Trump’s rush to savage institutions that have served the American public well for many decades.

We need a moratorium on his thoughtless impulse to destroy. The public must consider and weigh in on the implications of privatizing the Postal Service, abolishing the Department of Education and gutting the oversight capabilities of nonpartisan public servants.

We need civil servants who can consider public policy without a profit motive. As our population grows, we need to increase allocations to government services, not reduce them. The public good should not be sacrificed to “lower the deficit” while tax cuts are enacted for the super-rich.

Dems seem to think sky is falling

Some Democrats actually voted for Donald Trump last November, and even some who don’t approve of Trump’s methods to reduce waste, fraud and abuse in government recognize such actions are good for the country and may prevent its financial collapse.

Meanwhile, anti-Trump Democrats seem to be changing that party’s mascot from a donkey to Chicken Little, as they equate attempts to reduce the government’s size with the sky falling. I guess they consider their actions rational, but that only makes sense if their outrage is geared to their continuing to dip their beaks into the government’s stream of largesse — otherwise known as other people’s money.

I don’t know how many such beak dippers there are, but the number of hysterical Readers Write letters fearing government’s collapse indicates there’s a huge flock of them.
