Gun bill fails to protect communities

Senate Bill 47, the first gun bill the Senate considered this session, fails to meet the moment. Instead of protecting our kids and communities from the scourge of gun violence, the majority decided that its priority was to give more money to gun manufacturers.

SB 47 is a handout to the gun industry, or better stated, is a reward for how well gun manufacturers have served the majority. There is no need to solve the epidemic of gun violence if there is money to be made on the problem.

Georgians deserve real, commonsense solutions to the threat of gun violence. However, it seems like the Republican majority is more eager to defend gun profits than the safety of our communities.

Millions will suffer without USAID

The elimination of USAID will by far be the most impactful decision by President Donald Trump on the rest of the world. Millions of men, women and children around the world rely on aid from the United States for meals, medical assistance and many other services.

In all, I believe the U.S. will receive serious repercussions from eliminating this essential service.

RFK Jr. not competent to head nation’s health

Trump rails against diversity, saying that it produces incompetence.

We’d have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find someone more incompetent than RFK Jr., who now heads the Department of Health and Human Services.

And this contains a high level of irony that, with his bizarre positions on health, he now is in charge of our nation’s health. He’s the last person who should hold this position.

But, as a white male, we can’t blame diversity on his incompetency.

Calling on Kemp to stand up to Trump

I am 74, a lifelong Democrat raised by Republicans. I’ve had “cross the board” discussions with all and ended with “agree to disagree” amicably and with respect, including during the years of the Vietnam War.

I now ask Gov. Brian Kemp, who has opposed illegal actions, to do the same again. While we may not agree on all issues, I believe we agree on keeping our country strong and democratic and working with our longtime democratic allies. Please lead Republican and Democrat governors together and save our Republic.

Trump is a figurehead — at the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and by taking over the Kennedy Center. He has given our country to unelected Elon Musk to infiltrate our Social Security, our IRS records and so much more to the detriment of the people of the USA and other countries.

Georgia has already lost two planned manufacturing plants. Our farmers have lost overseas markets. Our port and rail systems will be impacted should we shutter our doors to foreign trade. Does the U.S. want to be joined with Russia, China, North Korea and Hungary? Gov. Kemp, please lead your fellow governors to work with congressional leaders to stop the coup of our country.
