‘Golden Age’ may not be so golden
Welcome to the Golden Age of mass deportations, climate change denial, unvaccinated children in our schools, pardons for the felons who beat up police officers on Jan. 6, 2021, immigration raids, “beautiful” 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, trying to throw tens of millions off health insurance coverage and capitulation to Russia. And don’t forget the higher grocery prices and inflation these policies will cause.
Thanks a lot to those of you who voted for this. We will be reminding you in the next election cycle.

What happened to common values and common sense?
As an American citizen, I wonder how we speak of justice when we pardon those who assaulted police officers at the Capitol.
How do we speak of fairness when we punish the undocumented workers rather than the corporations who employ them? How do we claim to love our children when we bow to the National Rifle Association instead of requiring safe storage of guns? How do we insist on loving life when we restrict women’s reproductive freedom and don’t offer these same women universal day care? How are we the home of the brave when our politicians, including Gov. Brian Kemp, and our tech billionaires chase money and power rather than challenge misinformation and vengeance?
I was taught to love our country, but right now, the country seems to love only some of us. Can we find common ground, common sense and common values to care for all of us?

Hard to believe we voted in this regime
President Donald Trump has rigged the courts, brainwashed the Republicans, enlisted the “broligarchs,” emptied the prisons of his violent supporters, conned the masses, licensed the racists and created a grift scheme to empty their pockets. Golden sneakers and a “Never Give Up” T-shirt complement the Trump-likeness toy coins.
Expect celebration. The Republicans caved long ago, except for a handful who have been voted out. We’re going to get what our neighbors voted for. We aren’t the first to have such a regime. We’ve been privileged and seemingly exempt in our lifetimes. It’s such a tragedy to waste what so many earned in the past century. It is hard to believe, but it is here in the United States.

Trump will have a stronger second term
I just read Carolyn Bordeaux’s Jan. 19 essay stating that President Donald Trump will have a weaker hand in his second term, and I strongly disagree.
Trump now knows our Justice Department and intelligence agencies cannot be trusted. Trump is going to be on the lookout for FBI agents illegally obtaining warrants and Democrats alleging Russia collusion. Trump is going to accomplish great things and will appoint an attorney general who won’t allow his administration to be crippled by obstructionist Democrats getting their wish of a special counsel this time.

Rep. Carter lacks empathy for fragile sea creatures
I am again appalled at the lack of empathy Rep. Buddy Carter has for the beautiful, fragile creatures who inhabit our coastal waters. He has already proved that he is against protecting the Okefenokee, so it’s not surprising that he cares nothing about protecting the right whale. Extinction is an ugly word, and this is what will happen if nothing is done to lower the speed of vessels that travel up and down our coast.
He says he wants a grant to study this problem. I would like to ask Carter this question: How many of these gentle giants will die while you “study” this problem?
