Need leadership to bring country together

Our country has never been more divided, and it’s incredibly unfortunate that we no longer share a common sense of unity as Americans.

When we landed on the moon, the entire nation rallied around the mission and celebrated together. As a native Atlantan, I vividly remember how everyone came together during the 1996 Olympics, despite the park bombing tragedy, and how, after 9/11, the country united in a profound way.

Right now, we’re at a crossroads. What we need is leadership that can bring us together— not drive us further apart. We all need to be our own presidential administration. Love your family first, as Mother Teresa said, and make a difference by volunteering in your community and spreading kindness — even to those you disagree with. That is how we start to turn things around.

Some states taking more than they give

There seems to be a movement to rid our nation of waste and fraud. That’s a good thing since we all seek to maximize our efforts for ourselves and the nation. People are upset that “someone” out there is not earning their keep, so they should be fired (even if they have to rehire them later).

The mindset for this is that these slackers are taking more than they give.

Federal funds are handed out to states based upon need without much regard to how much each state sends to D.C. in taxes.

But, if we apply the “waste and fraud” filter, shouldn’t we be upset with states that take more than they give? Why should my tax dollars go to “slacker” states? And guess which states fit that mold? Red states. By a large margin.

Just about every state in the South receives more federal funds than they pay in taxes. If Elon Musk can fire people who earn every dollar they make, then it should be easy for him to use his red pen against states living off the federal gravy train.

Trump is making America poor and distrusted

Donald Trump’s mantra is Make America Great Again. Instead, he’s making America poor, sick, uneducated, unsafe and distrusted with everything he has done in the past two months. And Republicans are going right along with it, even gleefully.

With the exception of Marco Rubio, the government is being run by a bunch of know-nothings. These are Trump sycophants who have no clue about the departments they’re running. Trump and Musk are slashing the government workforce with no thought to what they’re doing. Cutting programs like Medicaid and USAID is cruel.

As a retired worker, I worry about Medicare and Social Security, as well as the economy. I am concerned about our environment and the destruction that Trump is determined to bring to it. I fear for our health care, education, infrastructure and so much more. And I am disgusted that our allies are being treated so shamelessly.

My country is being ripped apart, which is not great.
