The Netflix series, which is shot in the Atlanta area, will feature the soda in multiple episodes of season three as part of an integrated advertising package.
The Atlanta-based beverage company announced it will also bring New Coke back in a very limited way to consumers.
Not exactly sure what New Coke is? Here are some fast facts.
What is New Coke?
In the 1980s, Coca-Cola decided to change the formula of its original drink. The product was dubbed "New Coke," and it launched on April 23, 1985.
The brand introduced the soda after the new formula was preferred in taste tests of almost 200,000 people.
What does it taste like?
At the time of its release, a Time’s food critic said, New Coke “approaches the sweetness and thinness of Pepsi, [but] it does not have the lemony aftertaste.”
Why did it go away?
Consumers did not like it. Coca-Cola received tons of backlash from customers, who wanted the original version back. So the corporation reversed its decision after 79 days, and on July 11, 1985, original Coke, which was briefly called “Classic Coke,” returned.
Was New Coke ever relaunched?
New Coke returned in 1990 as Coke II. It was test-marketed in some American cities and launched nationally in 1992. In 2002, Coca-Cola announced it would be discontinued.
How can I get New Coke now?
New Coke will be available for a very limited time and in limited quantities this summer in the U.S. starting 5 p.m. ET May 23 on CokeStore.com/1985. It'll only be available as a gift with purchase, Coca-Cola said in a release.
Visitors of the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta on select days during the week of June 3 will also have a chance to get special New Coke cans as a gift, while supplies last.
