The pedestrian bridge that collapsed Wednesday was under construction at Florida International University in West Miami-Dade.

The bridge was designed to provide safer pedestrian access to the FIU campus from the city of Sweetwater, located across the busy Tamiami Trail, which is also called Southwest 8th Street. The bridge location is SW 8th Street at 109th Avenue in West Miami-Dade.

The 950-ton section of bridge was installed Saturday . It hadn't yet opened to foot traffic.

FIU is a public research university with about 54,000 students, according to its web site.
