Atlanta firefighters were back on Cheshire Bridge Road on Saturday after a fire broke out under an overpass less than a month after officials started demolishing another bridge on the same roadway.

Atlanta Fire Company 29 shared videos of the fire where black smoke could be seen filling the sky. The fire was underneath the bridge near the Buford Connector and where the roadway turns into Lenox Road.

Officials said the area under the bridge was extremely hot but crews had to make their way underneath the bridge to put out the fire. Getting close to the blistering flames, Target shopping carts could be seen, along with countless other items. Grills, mattresses, propane tanks, office chairs, couches, dressers and generators were just some of the many items found within the rubble, fire officials said.

The heat caused warped steel and spalling on the concrete. The whole extent of the damage was not disclosed by officials but the Georgia Department of Transportation went to the scene to assess the damage. The roadway was not shut down following the fire.

Officials said the blaze started from a “homeless encampment activity.” No one was injured in the incident.

The fire on Cheshire Bridge Road is not the first this year. Demolition of the fire-burned bridge on Cheshire that crosses over Peachtree Creek began in early November with plans to start rebuilding in 2022, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. The damage was caused by an August fire after a rupture in a 4-inch gas line. The blaze burned for about 24 hours.
