Voters fleshed out the leadership of Fulton County's newest city Tuesday, including picking a longtime resident as the first mayor of Chattahoochee Hill Country.

New Mayor Don Hayes, 64, has lived in Chattahoochee Hill Country since 1969. Hayes, who beat two-year resident Tom Reed, said the city will have its first organizational meeting today at 10 a.m.

He promised to do everything possible to maintain Chattahoochee Hill Country as it is today with fewer than 3,000 people scattered over more than 30,000 acres. "We'll keep a lot of green space, keep it rural," Hayes said. "I raised my kids here. It's beautiful."

New council members Carl Hattaway in District 2, David Hanson in District 3 and Rodney Peek in District 5 join John Taylor and Faye Godwin, who won seats in November.

Update, September 2008: Fulton County's newest city now has a shorter name. Approved by voters last year as Chattahoochee Hill Country, the new city will now be known by its more common name, Chattahoochee Hills. The City Council voted on Tuesday to change the name after surveying residents of the city.
