A vaccine incentive program in Augusta had its first day at the May Park Community Center on Wednesday, according to reports.

People lined up outside the doors for the Vax Up Augusta event to get their shots and to leave $100 richer, WRDW reported.

The program says its goal is to get 10,000 people vaccinated, according to WRDW.

“I’ve had a lot of people in my family get COVID, one of my stepsisters passed away, so I wanted to go ahead and prepare myself,” Cecil Harris Jr. told the station.

The vaccination rate in Richmond County is still below 40%, but experts have seen a small uptick the last month, WRDW reported.

“I really think the incentive is working, and we’re so excited to see that,” Rebecca Kershner, health district nursing and clinical director, told the station.

Residents who became fully vaccinated through the department between Aug. 19 and Sept. 7 can pick up their cards beginning Sept. 13 at 2420 Windsor Spring Road between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to WRDW.

The next event is scheduled Oct. 8, the station reported.
