After leading police on a chase, the driver of a Chevy pickup was killed Friday afternoon when the truck struck a car head-on in southeast Atlanta, also killing the woman who was driving the car, officials said.

The woman’s 7-year-old daughter was injured and taken to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston, the Georgia State Patrol said. Her condition is not known.

After the head-on collision on Memorial Drive, the truck struck another vehicle, the GSP said. The truck and the flatbed trailer it was towing then overturned on the driver’s side, and the truck burst into flames.

The woman was identified as Ashley Tewell, 47, of Decatur, the GSP said. Her daughter was identified as Lindsey Tewell, also of Decatur.

The truck driver was identified Monday as Quincey Gamar Norman, 36, of Lithonia, the GSP said in a statement.

“This was all caused by someone who did not want to pull over, for whatever reason,” GSP Lt. Richie Harris told Channel 2 Action News.

The incident began shortly after noon when a Capitol Police officer noticed a “suspicious vehicle” in the Capitol Hill area, according to the GSP.

The truck drove away, and a pursuit ensued. The chase went southbound on Capitol Avenue and then onto eastbound I-20, the GSP said. The driver left and re-entered I-20, and another officer took up the chase.

The driver exited I-20 again at Maynard Terrace, the GSP said. The driver then headed eastbound on Memorial Drive.

The driver crossed the center line, striking the westbound car head-on, according to the GSP.

A dog was in the truck at the time.

“It was turned over to DeKalb County Animal Control by a resident after it was located a few blocks from the crash,” GSP said in its statement.

Atlanta police and fire units responded initially, but the GSP is currently investigating the incident.
