An armored car fire blocked the exit from I-85 to Pleasant Hill Road on Thursday morning.

An armored truck fire temporarily blocked the exit ramp from I-85 to Pleasant Hill Road in Gwinnett County shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters extinguished the flames within minutes, but the fire caused extensive damage to the engine and cab of the truck, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett fire department.

“The fire appears to be mechanical in nature and started in the engine,” Rutledge said in an emailed statement. “The driver of the truck reported seeing smoke coming from under the hood as they traveled on the interstate.”

No injuries were reported.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the Brinks truck was carrying an undisclosed amount of cash. The money was later transferred to a second Brinks vehicle that arrived on scene, the GSP said.

The ramp reopened just before 10:15 a.m., but slight delays remained after the incident, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
