1. Horace T. Ward, federal judge and civil rights lawyer, dies at 88. 

Back when the old Paschal's restaurant on West Hunter Street was the hub where civil rights battle plans were laid out and their victories celebrated, there were some in the movement who could be counted on to thump their chests and swagger a little after a win.Not Horace T. Ward. A fledgling attorney for the venerable Donald L. Hollowell firm, Ward was the low-key one, not outwardly flashy. Read more. 

2. Man who murdered 3 still scheduled to die Wednesday. 

Daniel Anthony Lucas is running out of options to stop his execution Wednesday for a 1998 triple murder in Jones County. The State Board of Pardons and Paroles Board denied Lucas' plea to stop his lethal injection for murdering Steven Moss and his children, 15-year-old Kristin and 11-year-old Bryan. The board heard arguments Tuesday for and against the execution. It did not explain its decision. Read more. 

3. Global immunization: 50 years of work and success. 

Government is a creature of numbers and statistics, a generator of such vast quantities of data and reports that it's hard to appreciate sometimes the full human dimension of what it takes to protect everyone from vaccine-preventable diseases. That reality comes to mind as this year's World Immunization Week arrives, marking fifty years since the United States launched an ambitious global immunization effort. 4. 3-year--old dies after shooting himself inside Paulding County home. 

A 3-year-old boy shot and killed himself Tuesday morning with a gun belonging to his parents, Paulding County authorities said. Tuesday afternoon, after the county sheriff's office had finished its investigation and left the scene, the front yard of the Cole family home was littered with riding toys, a wagon, a slide — colorful reminders of happy times for a young family. 5. Family, friends mourn 9-year-old boy killed in Atlanta car crash. 

Isaiah Ward was walking along a sidewalk near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Mayson Turner Road when he was struck. He was with his older brother, 11-year-old Roland, and a friend, 12-year-old Timothy Hood. Roland, who suffered a broken pelvis and broken leg in the incident, watched Tuesday's proceedings from a wheelchair. Read more.
