Q: Are Masters players required to wear hats while participating?

A: Players aren't required to wear hats, an Augusta National Golf Club spokesman told Q&A on the News in an email.

A 2018 story by golf.com explained that a hat is prime sponsorship area.

“A hat deal often goes hand in hand with a club and apparel deal, of course, which can be extremely lucrative,” according to the story.

Q: In the Q&A on the News section on April 19, there was a question about an individual during the Masters named Jeff Knox. He was referred to as a “marker.” Could you explain to me what a “marker” is?

STEVE HOLLAND, ACWORTH

A: A non-competing marker is used when the field has an odd number of competitors, according to past stories on PGA.com and Augusta.com.

“Knox fills in with the odd man as a playing partner for pace of play consideration,” according to a 2019 PGA.com story.

Knox, who holds the Augusta National course record from the member tees, has been the longtime marker for the Masters, according to Augusta.com.

He was paired with golfer Eddie Pepperell during the third round of the 2019 Masters, and he’s often sought out by players for his knowledge, according to the PGA.com story.
