High school football player killed in Morgan Co. wreck

A football player at east Georgia’s Morgan County High School was killed early Saturday in a single-vehicle wreck just hours after Friday night’s game.

Seth Daniel Stapleton, 17, was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck southbound on Sandy Creek Road in Morgan County just before 6:30 a.m. Saturday when he lost control in a slight curve and ran off the road, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The truck hit a driveway culvert and two trees and overturned, ejecting Stapleton, who the GSP said was not wearing a seat belt.

The teen was taken to Morgan Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Stapleton, a senior guard on the Morgan County football team, was the only person in the truck, the GSP said.

The Morgan County High School Touchdown Club will be holding a candlelight vigil for the team, students and the community at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the school’s football field.

Update: A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Madison, according to the Morgan County High School Bulldogs Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Bostwick United Methodist Church, the Morgan County Touchdown Club or the Lake Oconee Shotgun Team.

Morgan County is about 60 miles east of Atlanta.
