Georgia's voter registration deadline is Monday for those who want to participate in the June 9 primary election for president, Congress and the General Assembly.

Roughly 1 million Georgians over 18 years old aren't yet registered but could sign up in time. There are already about 7.2 million registered voters in the state.

Those who recently moved to Georgia, moved to a new county or turned 18 need to register if they want vote.

Registered voters are eligible to vote by mail or in person.

More than 1.1 million voters have requested absentee ballots so far. In addition, polls will be open for three weeks of early voting starting May 18 and on election day June 9.

To be eligible to register to vote in Georgia, you must be a citizen, legal resident and more than 17 1/2 years old (though you can’t vote until you’re 18). In addition, you can’t be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude or found mentally incompetent by a judge.

Georgians can check their registration status, request an absentee ballot, view sample ballots and find voting locations at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov.

State law requires people to be registered to vote at least 29 days in advance of an election, which falls on Monday, May 11, for the June 9 election.
