May 7, 2019 - Atlanta - After the signing, Gov. Brian Kemp congratulated Sen. Renee Unterman, R - Buford. Between them is Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan. Kemp signed HB 481, the "heartbeat bill", on Tuesday, setting the stage for a legal battle as the state attempts to outlaw most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ed Setlzer, R-Acworth, and carried in the Senate by Sen. Renee Unterman, R - Buford, outlaws most abortions once a doctor can detect a fetus' heartbeat - usually around six weeks of pregnancy. Bob Andres / bandres@ajc.com
