Georgians who aren’t yet signed up to vote and want to participate in upcoming runoff elections must register today.

The voter registration deadline in Georgia is Monday, 29 days before the Aug. 11 primary runoffs. Eligible voters who register afterward will next be able to cast ballots in the presidential election in November.

People who have recently moved or become eligible to vote can sign up online, in person at county election offices or by mail. However, registration forms mailed today would arrive after the deadline to vote in the runoffs.

To be eligible to register to vote in Georgia, you must be a citizen, legal resident and more than 17 1/2 years old (though you can’t vote until you’re 18). In addition, you can’t be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude or found mentally incompetent by a judge.

There are runoff elections in 94 of Georgia's 159 counties next month. Races include contests for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Georgia General Assembly or local offices.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger recently extended the voter registration deadline for state and local primary runoff elections. The previous registration deadline for state and local runoffs was May 11.

Registration information and sample ballots are available online at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov.

Most people are automatically registered to vote when they obtain their Georgia driver's licenses. Over 7.3 million voters are already registered in Georgia.
