Brookhaven candidate for Georgia House responds to ethics complaint

Brookhaven House District 80 candidate Catherine Bernard said Monday she plans to file amended campaign reports in response to an ethics complaint made last week by a supporter of one of her opponents.

“More transparency in all matters relating to government is always a good thing,” said Bernard, who called the complaint “garbage.” She said the bulk of the funds in question involved food for volunteers and events, office supplies, postage, T-shirts and campaign push cards.

“Vitriolic, dishonest, and full of inaccurate and inappropriate statements about my candidacy – this was not the work of a concerned transparency advocate seeking to have the truth come out,” Bernard said of the complaint. “It was the work of yet another out-of-district political careerist who cares about getting a personal friend elected regardless of what is best for the people of our district.”

The complaint was filed by Will Kremer, former chairman of the Georgia Association of College Republicans. It accused Bernard of violating Georgia’s campaign finance laws by not fully disclosing how she has spent more than $8,000 in campaign funds over the past two years.

Bernard is one of three candidates for House District 80 competing in the GOP primary on May 24.

The North DeKalb County district is one of a few in the state considered politically competitive both in the primary and the November general election. The seat is currently held by Democratic state Rep. Taylor Bennett.
