Son of slain DeKalb sheriff-elect arrested on drug charges

A son of slain DeKalb County sheriff-elect Derwin Brown has been arrested on drug trafficking charges in Gwinnett County.

Jail records show that Michael Garrard Brown was booked into the Gwinnett jail Thursday night on felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking cocaine, marijuana, etc., and violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act within 1000 feet of a school.

He remains jailed without bond.

Michael Brown is one of six children of Derwin and Phyllis Brown.

Derwin Brown was elected DeKalb sheriff in 2000, but was gunned down in the driveway of his home on Dec. 15, 2000, three days before he was to take office.

Then-Sheriff Sidney Dorsey was convicted of masterminding his rival’s assassination. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Phyllis Brown died Dec. 24, 2006.
