Nearly six months after someone shot a Cobb police officer, authorities Friday announced an arrest.

Detectives Thursday arrested 19-year-old Shymel Young of Smyrna on a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer, said Sgt. Dana Pierce, the spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department.

About 1:15 a.m. July 12, Officer D. Rogers was on patrol at the Concord Chase Apartments on Hurt Road when he came across a suspicious man, Cobb police spokesman Mike Bowman said at the time. When the man saw Rogers, he ran. At some point during the chase, the man turned around and shot Rogers, who was wearing a bulletproof vest. He was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

After the shooting, Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta offered up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. In late November, the National Police Defense Foundation added $10,000 to the pot. Additionally, a billboard owned by Clear Channel went up at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Cranfill Road.

Young is at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.
